The Untold Story Behind the Spaghetti Scene in Lady And The Tramp

Some movie scenes become ingrained in our memories, like the famous "I'm flying" moment in Titanic or the pottery scene in Ghost. And of course, who could forget the romantic spaghetti scene in Lady And The Tramp?

In case you've somehow missed it, the scene features two animated dogs, Lady and Tramp, sharing a plate of spaghetti. As they devour a strand of spaghetti, they end up meeting at the same piece and their snouts grow closer, resulting in an unexpected "kiss".

But did you know that this iconic moment was almost left on the cutting room floor by Walt Disney himself? According to a viral TikTok video by Disney facts expert @disney.facts_by.charles, Walt wasn't initially convinced that the scene would be graceful enough for the movie.

Almost Cut by Walt Disney

"Walt wasn't convinced that it would be a very clean-cut scene," said Steven Vagnini, former studio archivist and curator for the official Disney fan club D23, in an interview with Yahoo Movies. "As you can imagine, if you have two pets and they eat a plate of spaghetti, it's hard to envision that being too graceful."

However, thanks to the persuasive mock-up created by directing animator Frank Thomas, Walt changed his mind and the scene remained in the final film.

The Fascinating Journey of Lady And The Tramp

The story behind Lady And The Tramp goes even further back than you might think. The film, released in 1955, originally began as a drawing of story man Joe Grant's Springer spaniel in 1937.

Walt Disney liked the sketches but didn't find much potential in the accompanying story Grant had suggested, so the project was put on hold. It wasn't until 1943 that Walt bought the rights to a short story called "Happy Dan, The Whistling Dog" and combined it with Grant's original sketches to create the beloved film.

In 1953, John Grant's novelization of the film story was published, two years before the movie's release, giving audiences time to familiarize themselves with the characters.

This just goes to show that not every shelved idea deserves to stay forgotten.
