EU Awards €166m to Advance Space Research
The European Union (EU) has granted €166m in Horizon Europe funding to support innovative research projects focused on Earth observation, secure telecommunications, and other key areas in the space sector. Through this funding, 54 selected projects will work towards breakthrough innovations that enhance the EU's competitiveness and technological autonomy, paving the way for new services and advancements.
Focus Areas of the Grant
The funded projects will cover a wide range of topics, including:

- Autonomous access to space
The aim is to leverage advancements in these areas and develop new applications for existing EU satellite networks like Copernicus, Galileo, and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service.
With a significant focus on supporting emerging space companies, 25% of the selected participants are start-ups and SMEs, who will receive nearly 30% of the allocated funding, driving innovation and growth within the industry.

Among the chosen projects, one noteworthy initiative is Space USB. This project aims to establish universal standards for connecting space object modules, enabling the construction and repair of satellites in space. Another project named Soler will study energetic solar eruptions to gain insights into their connection, interaction, and impact on the acceleration of high-energy particles.
Horizon Europe Funding and UK Rejoining
The Horizon Europe program, the EU's largest research and innovation funding instrument, has allocated a budget of over €95bn to support scientific endeavors across EU member states and other countries. Space-related projects are expected to receive approximately €1.6bn in funding throughout the program's lifespan until 2027.
