The Impact of Mobile Technology in Achieving UN Goals

The mobile sector has made significant strides in achieving the United Nations' (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the GSMA's Mobile Impact Report on SDG.

The report highlights the industry's contribution to fulfilling the 17 objectives adopted by UN member states since 2015, which aim to promote equality and prosperity.
By the end of 2022, the number of people without mobile coverage decreased to 400 million, down from 1.8 billion in 2015.

Throughout the period from 2015 to 2022, nearly two billion individuals gained access to mobile connectivity, resulting in a significant impact on various SDGs, particularly in the areas of industry, innovation, infrastructure, and education.
The GSMA's study reveals that the mobile sector has achieved 53% of the average impact score across all 17 goals, a notable increase from the initial 33% when the objectives were first established.

While developed markets such as North America and Europe are expected to have a higher SDG impact due to a larger number of mobile users accessing a wide range of digital services, the GSMA acknowledges that the industry will only reach 76% of its full potential by 2030.
Geopolitical conflicts, the global cost-of-living crisis, and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic are identified as significant hurdles that may impede the mobile sector's progress in achieving the SDGs.

Overall, the mobile technology advancements have resulted in a positive shift, with substantial improvements in connectivity and a wave of new digital services that contribute to the SDGs. However, there is still work to be done to fully realize the potential of mobile technology in addressing global challenges.
