BT Group has announced its intention to complete the shutdown of EE's 3G network by March 2024. The company's chief networks officer, Greg Mccall, revealed that the trial shutdown in Warrington received no customer complaints about coverage or performance, paving the way for the nationwide discontinuation. The 3G switch-off began in Warrington in July and will now progress across the country.

During the trial shutdown in Warrington, BT didn't encounter any capacity issues on its 2G or 4G networks, despite a surge in traffic. Mccall emphasized the positive outcomes of the pilot program, stating that they will initiate the main switch-off in January and aim to complete the process within three months. As BT executives have repeatedly highlighted, the network shutdown will result in substantial power and cost savings for the company. Currently, 3G accounts for 35% of BT's mobile network power usage, but with customer demand declining, the figure is expected to decrease further.
