Eir, a leading telecommunications company in Ireland, claims that its ultrafast 5G is available in 567 towns and cities across the country. Additionally, with many global players having a significant presence in Ireland, the country has a high number of tech-savvy consumers. High Awareness, Low Adoption

Despite the high level of awareness and satisfaction among Irish consumers, there is a significant difference when it comes to actual adoption of 5G. Only 27% of respondents in Ireland reported using 5G on their smartphones, compared to the 84% who are aware of the technology. This difference can be attributed to multiple factors, including the economic impact of looming recessions in many countries, slower upgrade rates due to rising costs, and the availability of lower-cost smartphone models that do not support 5G.

Furthermore, network providers seem to prioritize coverage in cities and towns rather than nationwide, leaving some consumers without 5G access in their home areas. This issue is more prevalent in larger countries compared to Ireland, which has a smaller landmass and overall population. Additionally, while 5G offers clear advantages over 4G, the predecessor technology still provides a satisfactory user experience, leading many users to question the need for an upgrade.

To improve 5G adoption, BearingPoint suggests several measures. Highlighting the specific benefits and use cases of 5G can help inform consumers on when and why they should consider upgrading. Additionally, the report emphasizes the importance of improving customer satisfaction in network performance to build confidence in the technology.

The Path to 5G Adoption

The report suggests that Irish consumers are willing to pay a premium for services like video streaming and gaming. However, to convince them to rely more on 5G technology, there needs to be a strong level of confidence in the consistent performance of mobile networks. BearingPoint recommends focusing on use-case specific offerings that showcase the advanced capabilities of 5G and how they can enhance specific experiences, such as gaming and video streaming.
