Irish Government Launches €50m Fund to Boost Technological Universities and Support Local Regions

The Technological Sector Advancement Fund (TSAF) has been introduced by the Irish Government to provide a €50m boost to Technological Universities (TUs) and enhance their support for local regions. The fund will cover the costs of ongoing and upcoming initiatives undertaken by TUs in Ireland.

The TSAF is a continuation of previous funding efforts, such as the HE Landscape Fund and the TU Fund, which aimed to convert former Institutes of Technology into TUs. The focus now is to move beyond the establishment phase and concentrate on integrating TUs within their regions.

"This fund will be about supporting TUs to fulfil their mission – to support the needs of individuals, business, and local communities," explained Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD. He emphasized the importance of delivering for the regions served by the TUs.

The eligible higher education institutions for the fund include Ireland's five TUs, the Dundalk Institute of Technology, and the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.

Goals of the Technological Sector Advancement Fund
- Nurture the growth and success of Technological Universities.
- Enable institutions to achieve their strategic ambitions.
- Enhance the capabilities of the technological sector.<
- Demonstrate the economic, social, and educational impact across regions in Ireland.
The Higher Education Authority (HEA) will manage the TSAF and support the mainstream activities initiated by TUs through previous funding streams. Additionally, new initiatives related to further landscape reform will also be supported. The ultimate objective is to bolster Ireland's technology sector.
The HEA is currently accepting applications for TSAF funding, with a deadline of 19 October 2023. Earlier this month, Minister Harris announced a funding increase of €83.68m to enhance the research capacity and collaboration between Irish TUs and regional businesses.
