Brexit is serving up a fresh perk: expect to clink pint-sized glasses of champagne and wine as early as next year.

It appears that a major change is on the horizon that will alter the way we purchase alcohol. Currently, we're obliged to choose between 250ml servings or the standard 750ml bottles. But before long, in a move reminiscent of Sir Winston Churchill's preferred practice, we may be able to buy 568ml (one pint) of wine.

Churchill had a penchant for pint bottles of champagne, affectionately dubbing them an "ideal size" that perfectly suited two people for lunch or one for dinner. This upcoming change, if enacted, could herald the most significant overhaul of UK drinking regulations in over half a century.

The shackles of former EU restrictions, which only permitted metric sizing, are poised to be cast off. These rules have been in place since the UK's 1973 entrance into the European Common Market, which effectively rendered pints of champagne non-compliant with the EU's weights and measures laws.

An imminent consultation on bottle sizes with the champagne and English sparkling wine industry is reportedly on the government's docket, with insiders hinting at potential early implementation next year.

"And what better way than by bringing back Churchill’s favourite?" one insider mused. Another added, "Now that we’ve departed the EU, we can abandon such restrictions. Efforts are already in progress to enact this change."

However, until the ink dries on the new legislation, wine aficionados should temper their excitement as the current bottle array on the shelves stays unchanged.
