TSMC Set to Build Chip Plant in Germany
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is nearing approval from its board to construct a chip factory in Germany as part of the country's €20 billion investment to boost its local semiconductor ecosystem.

The German government plans to contribute €5 billion for the manufacturing facility in Dresden, which will be established through a joint venture between TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP, as reported by Reuters.

The Dresden facility, which has been under discussion since 2021, will primarily focus on producing chips for the automotive industry.

The board of directors at TSMC is expected to grant final approval during a meeting on Wednesday, following which the company will formalize funding for the establishment through a letter of intent with Berlin authorities.

The decision will ultimately be made by the European Commission.

Germany has allocated €10 billion of its investment fund to support the construction of Intel's manufacturing site in Magdeburg, while an additional €750 million state fund is earmarked for a joint R&D center by German automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen and US chipmaker Wolfspeed.
