Lupoi believes that the increased public awareness of scientific research during the Covid-19 pandemic may result in more recognition and funding for this crucial field. Lupoi initially focused on a new metallic coating process called 'cold spray.' This process does not rely on fusion heat and offers several advantages. Although it was challenging to establish a laboratory facility for this process, Lupoi's dedication paid off, and he successfully started his journey in this field.

While cold spray remains an area of interest, Lupoi has also delved into other areas such as laser printing by laser ablation, laser powder bed fusion, and the development of innovative technologies unique to his lab. One notable example is Metal Additive Manufacturing using Powder Sheets (MAPS), which holds promise for revolutionizing metallic material printing. Lupoi leads a research team consisting of PhD candidates, master's students, and research assistants and fellows.

He also finds attending scientific events outside his core expertise to be impactful, as it fosters innovative ideas and interdisciplinary approaches to research. One such event led to collaborations and publications exploring cold spray applied to high-entropy alloys.
