The union has confirmed that there was a resounding approval through an electronic ballot for a wage increase of 5% for 2022-23. This acceptance facilitates continued negotiations for a subsequent agreement for 2023-24, all while avoiding further strike action or job cuts.

However, the drivers' union Aslef is still in disagreement, and a series of planned actions, including bans on overtime and successive strikes, are set to commence starting Friday.

Union Leadership Comment on the Agreement

RMT's general secretary, Mick Lynch, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating: "Our members have spoken in huge numbers to accept this offer and I want to congratulate them on their steadfastness in this long industrial campaign." Lynch celebrated the effectiveness of persistent strike action and unity, crediting them with securing the deal.

Regarding the upcoming discussions for wage increases scheduled from April 2023, the talks are expected to be held early next year with various train operators. Should these talks not yield results, the union has indicated that no new strike ballots will be considered before April.

Government and Industry Reaction

The Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, welcomed the news, citing it as an important stride toward resolving the industrial disputes within the rail sector. This resolution is seen as a means of providing workers with a pay raise before Christmas and establishing a path to enact long-awaited reforms.

Harper also addressed the ongoing dispute with Aslef, mentioning that the union is yet to allow its members to vote on an offer that could see the median salaries of train drivers increase from approximately £60,000 to £65,000 for a 35-hour workweek spanning four days. Harper urged Aslef to take cues from RMT and empower their members with a vote on the offer.

Spokespersons for the Rail Delivery Group, which represents the train operators, also expressed contentment with RMT members' decision. They noted that this outcome enables a pay rise for railway employees and signifies successful negotiations with three of the four unions involved in the recent industrial disputes. They further appealed to Aslef to withdraw the looming industrial action, aiming to reach a just settlement that ensures timely train services and places the railway on a sustainable financial path, particularly at a time when the government is supplementing an extra £54 million per week to maintain operations following the Covid-19 pandemic.
