Tugendhat has expressed his concerns about the event in letters to London mayor Sadiq Khan, Westminster Council, and the Metropolitan Police. The march is set to take place on Saturday, November 11, which coincides with Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I. A two-minute silence will be observed at 11am.

During an interview on BBC Breakfast, Tugendhat emphasized the significance of the day for veterans, stating, "It’s a moment when we remember those we lost and… the Cenotaph is sacred ground." He argued that having a protest march pass by the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day would not be acceptable.

Concerns Over Timing and Location

However, the organizers of the pro-Palestine march have assured that they will not pass the Cenotaph, where Remembrance Sunday wreaths will be laid by politicians and veterans the following day. Despite this assurance, Tugendhat has urged the authorities to thoroughly assess their powers and explore available options to address the march.

When asked if the protest should be banned, Tugendhat acknowledged the importance of protests in a free society. However, he stressed that the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday is a sensitive place and time that brings the country together. He expressed his belief that there are moments and locations where protests are not appropriate.

March Organizers Assure Sensitivity

The Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA), the group behind the planned march, has stated that they understand the sensitivity of the date and will not be at the Cenotaph. FOA aims to bring attention to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas and is arranging transportation for protesters from Leicester to London.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the march organizers are considering various alternative locations in London, acknowledging the sensitivities surrounding the date. However, the final decision on whether to ban the march lies with Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
