The findings revealed a significant decline in the tablet market, with global shipments dropping to 28.3 million units, marking a 29.9% year-over-year contraction. Meanwhile, Chromebooks also experienced a slight decline, with shipments totaling 5.8 million units in Q2 2023, a 1.8% year-over-year dip.

The second quarter showcased a continued lack of demand for tablets. Consumers remained cautious in their spending due to concerns about rising inflation and economic instability. Additionally, supply chain disruptions caused by the ongoing chip scarcity further contributed to the decline in tablet availability, exacerbating the slump in shipments.

Despite the overall decline, Apple maintained its dominant position in the tablet market, shipping 10.5 million units and capturing a 37.0% market share. Samsung secured the second spot with 5.8 million units shipped, holding a 20.6% market share. Lenovo took third place, delivering 2.1 million units and capturing a 7.6% market share. HUAWEI and Xiaomi also made the top five list, each experiencing more than a 20% year-over-year decline in shipments.

While Chromebooks also faced a decline in shipments, the impact was relatively minor. In Q2 2023, shipments totaled 5.8 million units, indicating a mere 1.8% year-over-year reduction. This quarter marked the first year-over-year growth for the Chromebook market since Q1 2020.

Leading the Chromebook market was HP, shipping 0.9 million units and commanding a 15.6% market share. Lenovo followed closely behind with 1.3 million units shipped, claiming a 21.7% market share. Dell Technologies secured the third position, delivering 1.5 million units and capturing a 25.6% market share. While Dell's shipments experienced a decline, HP and Lenovo showcased impressive growth.
Outlook and Insights
The tablet market is expected to continue its decline in the coming quarters due to cautious consumer spending and ongoing supply chain disruptions. However, the Chromebook market is predicted to maintain a more stable course, thanks to their popularity in education and corporate sectors.

Anuroopa Nataraj, a senior research analyst with IDC's Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, shared her insights:
βRecent economic market conditions have led to increased tablet deployments, particularly in emerging markets. Cost-effective products with valuable features have gained significant traction in these markets, attracting new entrants and driving better growth rates compared to more mature markets."
