The Game-Changer: How Axian Is Revolutionizing Senegal with a Surprising Strategic Move

Africa-focused Axian Telecom has finalized an agreement to increase its ownership in joint venture Free Senegal to 80%, pending regulatory approval. The move marks a significant step towards Axian Telecom's plan to consolidate the operations of Free Senegal into its wider organization.

Free Senegal, formerly known as Tigo, was acquired by Axian Telecom and its partners from Millicom in 2018. The consortium, named Saga Africa Holdings, also included NJJ Capital, controlled by Iliad founder Xavier Niel, and Teyliom Group.

With the acquisition of an additional 40% stake in Free Senegal, Axian Telecom will gain control over the operation and consolidate it financially. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Axian Telecom Chairman, Hassanein Hiridjee, expressed gratitude to the partners for their contribution to the development of Free Senegal since 2018 and their support for the transaction. He stated, "This additional investment reflects our continued confidence in the thriving economy of Senegal and increases our footprint in West African markets."

Axian Telecom operates in nine markets, including Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With a customer base of 36 million, the company positions itself as the seventh-largest mobile operator group in Africa.
