The Future of Foldables: Google's Hardware Requirements

A shiny new foldable smartphone is great, but despite the massive improvements in the foldable niche, there is still uncertainty regarding device longevity and rigidity associated with foldables. While manufacturers provide assurances, recent tests have shown that some devices fall short of expectations. For example, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra only managed 126,266 folds, despite being rated for 400,000 cycles.

According to insider info from Mishaal Rahman, Google plans to address this issue by implementing hardware requirements for future foldable smartphones. The new requirements would ensure that foldable devices can withstand at least 200,000 folds and unfolds. If a user opens their phone 100 times a day, this would equate to five years of usage. If the hinge is cycled only 50 times a day, the device could last an impressive ten years.

In addition to the folding capabilities, Google might also require devices with a "torque hinge" to maintain at least 80% of their original torque after 200,000 cycles. This would ensure that devices like the Galaxy Z Flip5, which experienced torque issues during a recent folding test, maintain their ability to hold half-closed angles even after extensive use.

Furthermore, Google may require OEMs to provide at least two major OS updates and three years of security patches for future foldable devices. While companies like Google, Samsung, and Oppo already offer up to five years of security patches, these requirements would ensure continued software support.

It is important to note that these requirements have not been officially confirmed by Google, but we will be keeping an eye out for any updates.
