SpaceX Plans to Launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Connectivity Next Year
In a partnership between T-Mobile and SpaceX, it was announced in 2022 that direct-to-cell satellite connectivity would be introduced via the Starlink network. According to a recent report, SpaceX is accelerating its launch schedule to deploy a higher number of operational satellites in the coming months and next year. The aim is to have 100 flights within the next two-and-a-half months and an even more ambitious schedule of 12 flights per month or a total of 144 missions in 2024.

A spokesperson from SpaceX stated to Ars Technica, "We're also going to look at direct-to-cell communications with Starlink, and that's a key feature that gets added next year with those 144 flights."

The satellite LTE service, offering speeds of up to 2Mbps, is expected to be released in 2025. According to Ars Technica, this advanced service requires larger satellites that will be launched using the SpaceX Starship vehicle. In the meantime, the company has designed intermediate-sized units, which are larger than the previous models but can still be launched on Falcon 9 rockets.

T-Mobile's popular plans, including their Magenta MAX plan, will offer Starlink connectivity at no additional cost. Customers on lower-cost plans will be able to pay an extra fee for access. However, specific timelines for these launches have yet to be announced.
