The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded Spire Global a €16m contract to design a satellite-based aircraft surveillance system. This partnership will revolutionize air traffic management by leveraging satellite technology to track planes accurately.

The space services company, Spire, will be responsible for developing the initial design and operating a demonstrator mission. The objective of the project is to track aircraft by utilizing multilateration, a technique that determines the exact position of planes through radio frequency signals.

Currently, aircraft positions are visible to controllers through the use of transponders or self-reporting with the assistance of global navigation satellites. However, the ESA's Eurialo project seeks to enhance existing systems with an advanced, independent surveillance system that verifies plane locations using multilateration. This initiative aligns with the EU's "master plan" for air traffic management, which aims to establish space-based infrastructure for safe and efficient air travel.

Spire, known for operating its own satellite constellation that observes the Earth in real-time using radio frequency technology, is well-positioned to undertake this project. Peter Platzer, CEO of Spire, expressed gratitude for being selected by ESA, emphasizing that space-based aircraft tracking and geolocation is the future of air traffic management on a global scale. Platzer believes this collaboration will pave the way for safe, secure, and sustainable air travel.

Additionally, Spire plans to expand its presence in Germany by opening a new office in Munich through a local subsidiary. This strategic move aims to strengthen Spire's small satellite segment within the country, further expanding its geographic footprint to encompass nine offices across six countries.

The EU is committed to bolstering and advancing various satellite programs. Recently, it forged a partnership with Japan, where the country will provide data from its non-commercial Earth observation satellites to the EU's Copernicus satellite program, enhancing its capabilities.
