Institutional Partnership for Cancer Research

Researchers at the University of Galway and the University of Notre Dame have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate joint efforts in cancer research. The agreement, signed by Prof M Sharon Stack, director of Notre Dame's Harper Cancer Research Institute, and Prof Michael Kerin, director of the Saolta-University of Galway Cancer Centre, aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.

The Biseach Initiative

The collaboration between the two universities, known as the Biseach Initiative, was established in 2019 when a delegation from the Harper Cancer Research Institute visited the University of Galway. Since then, students and academics from both institutions have engaged in reciprocal visits and online research symposia. To further strengthen their ties, a cancer research retreat was held at the Kylemore Global Centre in 2022.

Strengthening Collaboration

The memorandum of understanding between the University of Galway and the University of Notre Dame will enhance collaboration through various initiatives, including student and faculty exchange programs, virtual symposia, joint publications, patents, and in-person conferences and seminars.

"The Biseach Initiative, enabled by the Notre Dame Kylemore Global Centre, harnesses the appetite for collaboration, to further translational cancer research and provide educational and development opportunities for our students and research leaders," said Prof M Sharon Stack.

"The west and northwest of Ireland have some of the worst outcomes from cancer nationally. We aim to change this by developing a comprehensive, research-led cancer centre for our region. This research collaboration with the University of Notre Dame will allow us to make a real difference to cancer outcomes," added Prof Michael Kerin.
