Researcher Receives EU Funding to Develop New 2D Materials for Advanced Digital Devices

Prof Jonathan Coleman of Trinity College Dublin, together with the AMBER research center, has secured funding from the European Commission for a groundbreaking project called "2D-Printable". This initiative aims to create more than 40 new 2D materials, which will be used to manufacture advanced digital devices.

The "2D-Printable" project brings together eight research teams from across Europe, with Prof Coleman leading the coordination. The goal is to fabricate "nanosheet networks and heterostructures with unique properties". These materials will be utilized in the production of devices such as solar cells, transistors, and LEDs.

The funding, provided by Horizon Europe, the EU's esteemed research and innovation program, will contribute towards the project's success. It is part of "Cluster 4", which focuses on the digital, industry, and space sectors and has a budget of over €95bn.

Explaining the significance of the project, Prof Coleman stated, "This is a fantastic opportunity to expand cutting-edge research and further contribute to the development of this rapidly evolving field. We are thrilled to be leading this effort and collaborating with leading research teams across Europe."

The knowledge and advancements gained from this project are expected to have a positive impact on various emerging technologies, including energy storage, environmental monitoring, and water purification. These advancements have the potential to address some of the world's most pressing global challenges.

In line with the Graphene Flagship, a renowned EU scientific research initiative, this project represents the latest stage. The Graphene Flagship has a budget of €1bn and focuses on the exploration and utilization of graphene and other 2D materials.

Prof Coleman's previous achievements include receiving €2.2m in funding from the European Research Council's Advanced Grants in 2016. This funding aimed to support the development of next-generation IoT electronics.
