The head of the Oulu Nokia site, Jarkko Pyykkonen, highlighted the significance of integrating radio software and hardware development in a single location. This synergy has been instrumental in generating the majority of Nokia's 5G Massive MIMO platform products.

At the heart of these operations is Nokia's comprehensive over-the-air validation area. This massive R&D lab is dedicated to testing wireless signal performance across a multitude of real-world conditions, including those as challenging as maintaining connections to high-speed trains.

Nokia's historical roots in Oulu stretch back 50 years—spearheading the company's strides through all generations of mobile technology from 1G. Pyykkonen boasts about Oulu's distinguished setup which consolidates research, R&D, testing, supply chain, and manufacturing all in one locale—a rarity among its rivals.

Nokia's present factory in Oulu, empowered by a private 5G network, prioritizes research and development of the latest innovations, forgoing mass production in favor of technological breakthroughs. Yet plans are already in motion for a state-of-the-art replacement facility, situated near the University of Oulu, that will not only increase production capabilities but also align with ambitious environmental targets to achieve zero CO2 emissions.

The future hub, deemed by Nokia as the vanguard among “multi-energy optimized ICT” campuses, intends to recycle residual heat to the extent that it could potentially warm 20,000 households each year.

Nokia's vision extends to attaining complete self-sufficiency in energy, blending an array of sources such as heat pumps, hydrogen fuel cells, and solar panels to liberate the new campus from Finland's electrical grid. This autonomy also grants Nokia the flexibility to design its factory and testing grounds from the ground up, encompassing a space equivalent to five football fields and equipped for harnessing cutting-edge technology.
