Nio, the Chinese EV Producer, Introduces Groundbreaking Smartphone

China-based electric vehicle manufacturer Nio has unveiled its first smartphone, targeting its existing customer base in China. This move marks the company's expansion beyond the automotive sector.

Nio's Flagship Smartphone with Car Integration Features

In an interview with CNBC, Nio CEO William Li expressed his intention for at least half of their car customers to purchase the new smartphone. This decision was prompted by the company's car app having 600,000 active users, which is 1.5 times the number of Nio car owners.

The flagship smartphone boasts a 6.8-inch OLED curved screen and is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen2 processor. With a thickness of 8.9mm and weighing 212g, the device offers a sleek and lightweight design.

One of the notable features of the smartphone is its ability to directly access 30 car control functions with just one click. It also includes a button that serves as a car key.

The pricing for the smartphone starts at CNY6,499 (£892) for the 16GB version, and it is available in seven colours.

Nio's Diversification beyond Automobiles

Nio positions itself as more than just an automaker. In addition to producing electric vehicles, the company offers battery swap services, shared workspaces in 125 locations, and a wide range of lifestyle products.

Despite entering a market with low demand, Nio aims to differentiate itself by integrating its smartphone seamlessly into its car ecosystem.

Competition in the Chinese Automotive and Technology Market

China's automotive and technology market is competitive, as shown by Geely Group's majority stake acquisition of Chinese smartphone brand Meizu last year. Meizu plans to incorporate consumer electronics technologies into the automotive sector, including an Android-based smart cockpit operating system and infotainment system.

With its new smartphone launch, Nio joins the race to establish a strong foothold in this ever-evolving market.
