Birmingham launches new Dental and Biomaterials Testing Service
University of Birmingham Enterprise has announced the launch of the Birmingham Dental and Biomaterials Testing Service (BiMaTs). Co-founded by Professor Josette Camilleri and Professor Will Palin, BiMaTs will provide consultancy and a comprehensive materials testing service for dental and biomaterial manufacturers. Its range of services includes developing protocols tailored to individual client needs.

Expertise of the Founders
Professor Will Palin, co-founder of BiMaTs, is a renowned expert in Biomedical Materials Science and the Director of Research at Birmingham's School of Dentistry. His research focuses on innovative biomaterials, medical devices, and technologies for bone, tooth, and injury repair. Professor Palin's work in dental polymer materials, medical device development, and photobiomodulation has gained recognition. He is currently the Editor of the European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

World-class Testing Services
The BiMaTs team has access to state-of-the-art laboratory space and a wide range of equipment at the University of Birmingham. The testing service offered closely replicates biomaterial use in clinical situations and includes material characterisation, radiometry, thermography, assessment of endodontic sealer properties, microbiology, cell biology, and clinical assessment of instruments and materials.

According to Professor Camilleri, "Our expertise in bespoke methods and materials development has already attracted interest from top-tier companies. Through discussions with existing collaborators, we identified a lack of comprehensive testing centers capable of executing projects in a timely manner. This led us to formalize our offering and establish an Operating Division within the University of Birmingham Enterprise."
