Today, the Taiwanese company announced the MediaTek Dimensity 9300. This chipset is based on a 4nm+ process, offering significant performance improvements over its predecessor, the Dimensity 9200, which was based on a 4nm process.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 CPU Configuration Unveiled

A notable feature of the Dimensity 9300 is its CPU configuration. Unlike the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which has only one Cortex-X4 core, the Dimensity 9300 comes with four Cortex-X4 cores. In addition, the chipset features four performance-focused Cortex-A720 cores.

This configuration gives the Dimensity 9300 CPU a total of eight performance-focused cores, the same as its predecessor. However, unlike the Dimensity 9200, which featured efficiency-focused Cortex-A5XX cores, the Dimensity 9300 does not have such cores. While this may raise concerns about battery life, MediaTek explains that the use of more powerful cores can actually be more efficient, as it allows the CPU to complete tasks quickly and then power down.

Efficient Power Consumption with the Dimensity 9300

Although the Dimensity 9300 does not have energy-efficient cores like the Cortex-A520 found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, it does consume less power in its low-power state. This makes the A720 cores of the Dimensity 9300 more efficient overall.

The Dimensity 9300 also brings significant improvements in AI capabilities. It features an improved APU 790, offering double the integer and floating point capabilities and a 45% reduction in power consumption. MediaTek claims that the Dimensity 9300 provides an 8x performance improvement over its predecessor in terms of AI.

Better GPU Performance and Additional Features

In addition to the CPU and AI enhancements, the Dimensity 9300 comes with the latest ARM Immortalis G720 GPU. With architectural improvements, this GPU offers 23% better performance and a 40% reduction in power consumption compared to the Dimensity 9200. It also brings support for 2x MASSA and global illumination effects, as well as optimized geometry-heavy gaming.

Other features of the Dimensity 9300 include support for Google Ultra HDR, compatibility with high-refresh-rate panels (180 Hz WQHD or 120 Hz 4K), dedicated OIS sensor core, always-on HDR capture in 4K cinematic mode, 5G speeds up to 7 Gbps, Wi-Fi 7, full pixel-level autofocus, and ARM's memory tagging extension (MTE).

Availability

MediaTek is initially targeting the Asian and European markets with the Dimensity 9300. There is no information available on whether smartphones powered by this chipset will be available in the US. Historically, MediaTek chipsets have predominantly been used in Chinese smartphones.
