I Just Lost A Dog For The First Time. Here’s What I Learned About Surviving Pet Loss

Thirteen years ago, my husband Bryan and I adopted our first dog and it completely changed my life. I discovered the incredible bond and joy that dogs bring, which led me to focus my journalism career on pets. I covered everything from dog-friendly travel to training tips, wanting to share my knowledge and love for these amazing animals with the world.

Our first dog, Rio, was a Labrador retriever mix who filled our lives with happiness. He was full of energy and brought so much joy to everyone he encountered. Seven years later, we decided to adopt a second dog named Peach who was rescued as a stray. Despite her health issues, Peach lived a remarkable 5 1/2 years with us, defying the odds.

Unfortunately, earlier this year, Peach's health declined rapidly and she passed away. Grieving the loss of my first dog was overwhelming, and I wondered if I had been irresponsible for promoting the joy of pets while ignoring the pain of their loss.

I tried to find solace in gratitude and thanked Peach for all the precious memories, embracing the love she brought into our lives. I also expressed my gratitude towards the veterinary teams and Peach's groomer for their care. To honor Peach's memory, we donated items to an animal shelter, made a donation to the rescue organization that saved her, and participated in a charity fundraiser for homeless pets.

Recognizing that many others have experienced the loss of a beloved pet, I reached out for support. Online pet loss support groups offered by Lap of Love, a veterinary network, provided guidance and comfort during this difficult time.

As the months went by, my husband and I felt ready to open our hearts to another rescue dog. We attended a shelter fundraiser and ended up adopting Tux, a tiny black dog. While Tux brings new joy to our lives, he will never replace Peach. Each dog holds a special place in our hearts and has a unique bond with us.

Adopting Tux has brought happiness back into our lives. We cherish the memories of Peach and treasure the companionship of each new furry friend. Grief takes time to heal, but the love and joy that pets bring make it worthwhile to live and love again.
