Awarded Funding for Innovative Technology
The European Innovation Council's (EIC) Pathfinder programme has announced the recipients of its latest funding round. A total of 53 projects have been selected, receiving a combined grant of nearly €170 million. These projects aim to develop cutting-edge technology in a range of sectors, including health, artificial intelligence, energy, and more.

Among the successful applicants are two projects from Ireland. This is a testament to the country's commitment to innovation and research. The projects will receive a significant share of the funding, with an average grant size of €3.19 million.

The EIC Pathfinder programme was established in 2020 to accelerate the development of high-risk, high-impact research ideas into tangible technologies. With a highly competitive selection process, the chosen projects were selected from 783 applications.

The winning projects cover a diverse range of sectors, including healthcare, AI, computing, environmental sustainability, and energy. This empowers researchers to explore groundbreaking applications and advance innovation in their respective fields.

One of the Irish projects, called Polina, is led by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – RCSI. The four-year project focuses on investigating novel light-sensitive poly materials, aiming to revolutionize the field of biocompatible devices.
The second Irish project, coordinated by Smart Reactors, is concentrating on developing a biocompatible coating to enhance various medical device applications. The three-year project, named CellMembrane, aims to create a delignified nanocellulose-based gas transfer scaffold membrane for artificial lung applications.

In addition to the financial support, the selected projects will benefit from tailored coaching provided by the EIC Business Acceleration Services. This valuable guidance will assist the researchers in turning their ideas into successful ventures.
European Collaborations
The awardees represent a wide range of organizations, including higher education institutions, research organizations, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). France had the highest number of successful applications, followed by Spain, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

Several other notable projects secured funding in this round. One such project, E-Cool, aims to develop holistic cooling technology for electric motors, reducing heat generation during power-demanding operations.
Another project, 4TunaTES, focuses on flexible thermo-chemical energy storage technology that can be adapted to various applications. The project claims that this technology could significantly reduce development costs by up to 90%.
Continued Investment in Innovation
This is not the first time Irish institutions have received funding from the EIC Pathfinder programme. In 2020, three research projects in Ireland were awarded a total of €11 million in funding. This ongoing support highlights the country's dedication to driving technological advancements and fostering innovation.
