Introducing AMD's New Game-Changing Graphics Cards: The Secrets of Radeon RX 7800 XT and 7700 XT Revealed

AMD has unveiled its highly anticipated mid-range offerings in the Radeon RX 7000 series of graphics cards. The newly announced RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT were showcased at Gamescom 2023 and will hit the markets on September 6.

Both the 7800 XT and 7700 XT are based on the RDNA3 architecture, similar to other cards in the RX 7000 series. They feature the new Navi 32 GPU, which utilizes a chiplet design, unlike the monolithic design found in the RX 7600 with the Navi 33.

The Radeon RX 7800 XT boasts 60 compute units and ray accelerators, a 29% reduction compared to the 7900 XT. The ROPs (render output units) see a more significant decrease of 50% to 96. The game clock has been increased from 2000MHz to 2124MHz.

The memory bus has been reduced from 320-bit to 256-bit, resulting in a decreased bandwidth of 624GB/s compared to 800GB/s. The Infinity Cache capacity has also dropped from 80MB to 64MB.

With a typical board power of 263W, the 7800 XT comes equipped with HDMI 2.1 48Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1 54Gbps connectors, supporting AV1 decoding and encoding.

Priced at £499, the 7800 XT is set to compete against Nvidia's £599 GeForce RTX 4070. AMD claims the 7800 XT provides an average 4% higher performance at 1440p. Additionally, it offers 33% more memory than the 4070, along with a wider memory bus. However, the 4070 is a more power-efficient option with a total board power of 186W.

Presenting the Radeon RX 7700 XT

The Radeon RX 7700 XT is a slightly scaled-down version of the 7800 XT. It features 54 compute units and ray accelerators, along with the same 96 ROPs. The game clock is slightly higher at 2171MHz.

With 12GB of GDDR6 memory operating at 18Gbps, a 192-bit bus, and 432GB/s bandwidth, the 7700 XT is not far behind the 7800 XT in terms of specs. It also features a 48MB Infinity Cache and a board power of 245W.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3

AMD has provided further details about its upcoming FSR3 technology, which is AMD's answer to Nvidia's DLSS3. FSR3 includes frame generation technology known as Fluid Motion Frames, which can nearly double the frame rate. When combined with super resolution upscaling, it can almost triple frame rates in games like Forspoken. AMD is also introducing Anti-Lag+, a driver-based feature that reduces latency.

FSR3 will be compatible with Radeon 5000, 6000, and 7000 series graphics cards. While it can work on Nvidia cards, AMD recommends using it with their own 6000 and 7000 series for optimal results. There is no information regarding compatibility with older cards or Intel GPUs.

AMD has not specified the release date for this feature yet. However, they have announced initial support for Immortals of Aveum and Forspoken, along with confirmed compatibility for ten other titles including Cyberpunk 2077, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Black Myth: Wukong. Surprisingly, Starfield is not on the list of supported titles.
