The Importance of the HPV Vaccine

The NHS states that the HPV vaccine reduces the risk of getting the virus, which can lead to cervical, mouth, anal, and penile cancer, as well as genital warts. It is recommended for children aged 12-13, men who have sex with other men up to the age of 45, transgender people with the same risk as men who have sex with men, sex workers, and people with HIV. The only exceptions are those who have had serious reactions to the vaccine or its ingredients.

Getting the HPV Vaccine

The HPV vaccine is administered through injection. People under 25 only need one dose, while those between 25 and 45 generally require two doses given six months to two years apart. Individuals with weakened immune systems need three doses within a 12-month period. The vaccine is provided in secondary schools for children, and for girls under 25 and boys born after 1 September 2006, it can be given by a school nurse or GP surgery. Sexual health clinics and HIV clinics also offer HPV vaccinations for others.
