HPE Drives Ryder Cup Connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E, Private 5G

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has deployed an innovative integrated private 5G and Wi-Fi network at the 2023 Ryder Cup men's golf competition. The Ryder Cup, running since 1927, is one of the world's most famous sporting events and is taking place in Rome, Italy for the first time this year at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

HPE's cutting-edge network will provide enhanced fan and staff experiences, expanded coverage, and ultra-secure capabilities. The infrastructure combines the private 5G technology of Athonet, recently acquired by HPE, and HPE Aruba Networking's Wi-Fi technology. This network aims to meet the demand for ubiquitous high-bandwidth connectivity from fans and event staff at all times throughout the venue.

Digital Enhancement for Enhanced Fan Experience

Max Walker, chief technologist for HPE UK and Ireland, said, "We've transformed the Ryder Cup into the most digitally enhanced temporary event in sporting history. We focus on delivering an edge to cloud technology experience, enabling fans to use social media platforms like WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook."

The unique challenges of the golf course presented connectivity obstacles for organizers, players, and fans. With 370 acres of archaeologically protected countryside, HPE could not route fiber optic ducting throughout the entire course. Additionally, rats roaming the site made wireless options, such as integrated Wi-Fi and private 5G network, imperative.

Optimal Solution for High-capacity Connectivity

The Wi-Fi 6/6E networks serve as the mainstay for high-capacity connectivity in densely populated areas of the venue, while private 5G provides wide area coverage for more remote parts of the golf course and a secure network for critical operations staff. The Wi-Fi network consists of over 800 access points, delivering twice the capacity compared to the previous European Ryder Cup.

The network's backbone features 200 HPE Aruba Networking CX switches, offering AI-powered insights and control across the entire environment. HPE Aruba Networking ClearPass technology ensures secure access control and onboarding for an improved spectator experience. The HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform enables efficient network management, reducing the amount of onsite equipment required and providing a cost-effective and quick deployment process.

The Power of Private 5G

The private 5G network covers the golf course with a single radio mast, providing critical services like security, stewarding, ticketing, and scoring. It also extends Wi-Fi coverage to remote areas without cabling. Although Italy has allocated all 5G spectrum to mobile service providers, the Italian government made an exception for the Ryder Cup, granting access to the 3.8 GHz band.

Towards a More Sustainable Event

HPE emphasizes its commitment to creating a more sustainable event, leveraging wireless and cloud technologies to reduce physical equipment and disturbance of the golf course ecology. The event also showcases a new sustainability dashboard on the HPE GreenLake platform, providing insights to improve overall sustainability performance.

Phil Mottram, executive vice-president and general manager of HPE Aruba Networking, expressed excitement about the integration of private 5G and Wi-Fi in challenging environments, enhancing the fan experience and meeting operational needs.
