Debate Threat for Trump: The Man Whose Life He Almost Claimed with COVID

Donald Trump is threatening to avoid the upcoming Republican party’s presidential primary debates. A serious reason for this could be his former rival, the ex-president’s previous debate coach and present critic, Chris Christie.

Christie referred to Trump as a “three-time loser” in a recent radio interview, citing the years 2018, 2020 and 2022 when the GOP, under Trump's leadership, fared poorly in federal elections. “I cannot understand why our party wants to be led by a three-time loser who cares only about himself and not the party or the country,” said Christie.

Christie's Candidacy

Chris Christie, former New Jersey governor, who announced his candidacy only four weeks ago, is the only Republican candidate focusing his campaign on Trump. Christie told ABC News last month, “There’s one lane. And that one lane, Donald Trump’s at the head of.

Trump's Fear of Facing Christie

It remains uncertain whether Trump is afraid to go toe-to-toe with his former adversary. However, judging from Christie’s track record and his stated intentions of dealing with Trump, it’s likely that the Ex-president should be concerned. Christie himself subtly hinted that Trump was afraid to participate in a debate, although he did not specify his intimidation was about Christie himself.

“Obviously, he’s afraid. He’s afraid to get on the stage against people who are serious,” Christie claimed in a May radio interview. “This is a guy who seems like he’s afraid. And if he’s afraid, he has no business being president.”

Christie's Stance

Unlike other candidates, who evade questions concerning Trump’s behavior leading up to his Jan. 6, 2021, coup attempt, Christie loudly and frequently asserts that these acts make the former president unfit for office. ️

"It was one of the most disgraceful days in American history and ... the president was principally responsible for it,” Christie asserted last week on CNN. “Donald Trump, the entire time, sat outside the Oval Office, that little dining room of his, eating a well-done cheeseburger and watching TV and doing nothing to stop what was going on."

Christie's Intentions

Before his official race entry, Christie made it apparent that he would go head on with Trump at the debate stage, targeting Trump’s morals and his record. During an April appearance on a podcast, Christie recollected how Trump chose to attend long debate prep sessions over the next four days after testing positive for COVID without mentioning it to any of the advisers. Nearly everyone, including Christie, contracted the disease, and Christie nearly lost his life due to it.

The Strategy Against Trump

In his first race for the 2016 nomination, Trump was benefitted extensively by not being taken seriously by his rivals. By the time the other Republicans realized they had to confront Trump, he had already set on a winning path. "Playing nice with Trump, which was our entire strategy, in the end doesn’t work,” said Rick Tyler, previous campaign aide of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Whether that lesson has been absorbed by most of the current Candidates including South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron Desantis seem reluctant to criticize Trump directly. remains unclear.

Anticipation for The Debate

Christie believes that Trump's ego will not let him miss the August 23 debate. If Trump does not show up, Christie and other competitors attacking him in his absence will infuriate him, thereby, confirming his presence in the second debate the following month.

Qualifications for the Debate

However, whether Christie will make it to the first debate was questionable as the Republican National Committee (RNC) debate committee set requirements that could be hard for many to meet-

  1. show donations from 40,000 different donors,
  2. 1% support on at least three polls that have surveyed at least 800 likely primary voters.

According to Anthony Scaramucci, a previous Trump backer and briefly a Trump White House aide now supporting Christie, Christie doesn't care about Trump's bullying at the debate stage because he believes taking out the king will make him the king.
