BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) has received over 2,000 project ideas highlighting emerging trends in the submissions this year. Notably, health has emerged as a key focus, representing 16% of all projects.

Emerging Trends

A variety of emerging trends have been identified from the submissions, including AI, diversity, inclusion, and mental health. Young students are showcasing their interests through these project ideas, and mental and physical health has become the most common theme, accounting for 16% of all submissions. Projects in this category explore topics such as mental, menstrual, sleep, medicine, ageing, and behavioural health.

Vaping has also garnered attention among young people, with 2% of projects addressing the health and environmental implications of this practice. Meanwhile, AI is another significant area of focus, with 4% of entries related to AI models like ChatGPT being utilized in education and health.

Additionally, young students are showing a growing interest in developing technology to improve the lives of neurodivergent individuals, with 3% of projects focused on creating apps and tools for those with physical disabilities. The environment remains a popular topic, covered in 11% of submissions, followed by sports-related projects at 9% and education at 6%.

New Health and Wellbeing Category

The 60th edition of BT Young Scientist will feature a new health and wellbeing category, providing students an opportunity to delve deeper into their interests in this area. Minister for Education Norma Foley, TD, expressed enthusiasm about attending the exhibition in January to witness the exceptional ideas and innovations presented by students across Ireland.

BT has announced that 550 projects will be selected from hundreds of students to be showcased at the 2024 BTYSTE event scheduled to take place from January 10th to January 13th next year.

Past Success

In the previous edition of BTYSTE, Shane O'Connor and Liam Carew secured second place at the EU Contest for Young Scientists. Their project involved surveying 2,000 Irish students to assess how their educational experiences impacted their social, physical, and mental wellbeing.
