Watch Gran Turismo Sophy Drift Like a Pro β GTPlanet
If you had the chance to attend the Gran Turismo World Series Showdown in Amsterdam recently, you witnessed the impressive skills of the new GT Sophy AI agent, as it showcased its drifting abilities in a surprising exhibition. The Sony AI team has been dedicating their efforts to further enhance Sophy since its in-game test period in February, and it seems that one of the bots has discovered the joy of drifting along the way.

While it may not be entirely unexpected for the AI to learn drifting techniques to some extent, this revelation is quite surprising. Sophy has been utilizing rear-end rotation to enhance corner entry speed, as explained by Dr. Kaushik Subramanian of Sony AI: "Itβs always surprising to see the unique ways in which Sophy learns to drive around the track."

Considering the training method thus far focused on rewarding fast lap times, Sophy's ability to drift and slow down considerably is indeed a revelation. The video above showcases Drift Sophy performing a 360 entry drift, spinning the Lamborghini Countach (an intriguing choice for a drift car) in a full circle around three corners of Trial Mountain before smoothly sliding through.

Although it remains uncertain whether this entertaining version of Sophy will make it into Gran Turismo, it undeniably demonstrates that the AI can be trained to do more than just race as fast as possible. This is great news for non-professional drivers, as it hints at promising future versions of the AI that they can keep up with.

Collaboration with Polyphony Digital
Dr. Subramanian reiterates the comments made by Dr. Peter Wurman in a recent interview, confirming that Sony AI is working closely with Polyphony Digital to make Sophy a permanent and integral part of the game.
