The RSPB Blasts Government Over Abandoning Green Pledges

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has strongly criticized the government for breaking its environmental commitments, accusing ministers of being "liars".

The RSPB, with approximately 1.2 million members, expressed its anger on Twitter after the Rishi Sunak-led administration announced its decision to remove certain European Union regulations related to water pollution, which had been retained post-Brexit.

The move, aimed at facilitating the construction of new homes, received widespread backlash. Of particular note was the scathing attack from the typically mild-mannered environmental charity.

However, the government responded by stating that the impact of new homes on nutrient pollution in rivers is "very small", despite the widespread public outrage over sewage being discharged into waterways.

In response, environmental campaigner Feargal Sharkey highlighted that not a single river in England complies with the chemical standards, and the condition of rivers has been declining, with the government's own prediction indicating a further decrease by 2027.
