EV Charging Start-up GoPlugable Emerges as Top Winner at Invent 2023

Electric vehicle (EV) charging network start-up GoPlugable has secured the top spot at the prestigious 2023 Invent awards ceremony held at ICC Belfast. The event recognized outstanding innovators and entrepreneurs in Northern Ireland.

Founded in 2022 by Maebh Reynolds, a graduate of Queen's University Belfast, GoPlugable aims to build a home EV charging network. The platform allows first-time EV buyers to access charging points at neighboring homes, while charger owners can earn money by sharing access. Reynolds likens the company to "the AirBnB of electric vehicle home charging."

The Prize and Recognition

GoPlugable was not only named the overall winner but also emerged victorious in the Greentech award category. The start-up was awarded a significant £25,000 from a prize pool totaling £52,000.

In addition to this success, GoPlugable previously claimed an Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur award, further solidifying its position as a leader in the EV charging sector.

Empowering Innovations

Other winners of the night included WearMatter, a start-up focused on creating adaptive and functional clothing, which was honored with the Inclusive Innovation award. Levelway, an application that provides accessible routes for wheelchair users, emerged as the overall winner in the Student Invent category.

This year's event showcased a notable increase in female representation among the finalists. For instance, Feminatech, a start-up composed of five women, garnered recognition for their menopause tracking platform and secured a £1,000 prize with an impressive one-minute elevator pitch.

The organizers of Invent, Catalyst and Bank of Ireland UK, applauded the caliber of entrants and expressed optimism for the future of Northern Ireland's business landscape. Meg Magill, INVENT Programme Manager, congratulated the finalists and commended their remarkable work, stating, "The high calibre of entrants across all categories is incredibly encouraging and bodes well for the future of Northern Ireland business."
