Dragon’s Dogma 2: The First Hands-On Preview

When Dragon’s Dogma was launched in the gaming world eleven years ago, it quickly became known as a unique open-world action-RPG that defied traditional genre conventions. With its innovative Pawn mechanic, which allowed players to swap AI companions from a network of other players, and its intense combat system that involved climbing massive monsters to target their weak points, the game stood out from the rest. And even after all these years, it still retains its originality.

After getting the opportunity to play an hour of Dragon’s Dogma 2, it's clear that Capcom is doubling down on what made the first game unique, while also refining and polishing its core elements. The impact of the Pawns in combat and navigation is immediately noticeable, and melee combat feels more satisfying and weighty. The seamless open world is both rewarding and perilous, making exploration a thrilling experience. However, after playing through the demo, I couldn't help but wish for something truly innovative in this sequel.

Capcom is Doubling Down on Uniqueness

The demo began just outside the human kingdom of Vermund, offering complete freedom to explore. Equipped with knowledge of available quests, the Pawns guided me without the need to consult the map constantly. This improved reliability in quest navigation is a notable upgrade from the first game. A simple command allowed the Pawns to lead the way, making exploration seamless.

One of the most impressive interactions with a Pawn occurred when I discovered a treasure chest on a high platform. By issuing a help command, my fighter Pawn moved closer to the platform and knelt down, offering to boost me. With her assistance, I was able to collect a rare item. It was a small moment, but it demonstrated the depth of the game's mechanics.

Combat in Dragon’s Dogma 2 remains similar to the original game, with buttons for weak and heavy attacks, and a left bumper for a range of skills. The right bumper is now dedicated to the Vocation Action, a unique action tied to each character's vocation. These actions include shielding for fighters, dodging for thieves, and precise aiming for archers.

No Melee Lock-On or Dodge Roll

A new addition to combat is the hit-stop effect, which signals that an enemy is vulnerable to a strong attack when their health is low. This feature adds a sense of brutality to the battles. Notably, the game still lacks a melee lock-on mechanic and a dodge roll, unless they are tied to a character's specific vocation. While this might not please everyone, it emphasizes the importance of positioning, awareness, and exploiting enemy weaknesses.

Each playthrough of the demo felt different, bringing forth unique experiences. The paths taken, the enemies encountered, and the challenges faced varied, offering replayability and surprise. Exploring the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 felt organic, with danger and riches waiting around every corner, making it an enticing experience for exploration enthusiasts.

However, there was a sense of deja vu while playing the demo. The skills and enemy types resembled those from the first game, lacking substantial innovation. While Dragon’s Dogma 2 promises to deliver more of what fans loved about the original, I couldn't help but wish for something truly new and exciting in this sequel.
