Manchester Airport, one of the busiest airports in the UK, was forced to halt flights on Tuesday evening following a bomb threat made towards an Emirates flight from Dubai.

The Emirates Airbus A380, also known as the "SuperJumbo," arrived a few minutes late at 7:21 pm after a routine flight from the UAE hub. Simultaneously, Greater Manchester Police were alerted to an email claiming the presence of a suspicious package onboard the aircraft.

Flights Diverted, Airport Closed for 34 Minutes

While the Emirates flight was held on the apron, all airfield activities came to a halt. Three incoming flights were diverted to nearby airports. British Airways flight from London Heathrow and an easyJet flight from Palma de Mallorca both diverted to Liverpool, while Jet2's flight from Paphos in Cyprus redirected to Leeds Bradford.

The closure of the airport lasted for 34 minutes. Following comprehensive searches and security checks, no suspicious items were found. Passengers were then allowed to disembark the aircraft while additional officers were present to provide reassurance and answer any queries.

Despite the incident, passengers on the return flight to Dubai, EK20, experienced a delay of two-and-a-half hours, resulting in potential connections being missed at the Emirates hub.

Emirates spokesperson stated that the incoming flight, EK19, underwent additional security checks upon arrival.

This incident comes less than a week after a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to London Heathrow was diverted to Stansted Airport due to a bomb threat. However, no suspicious items were discovered.
