Dominic West, acclaimed for his portrayal in the latest seasons of The Crown, has opened up about the show's contentious ghost scenes. The recent episodes depicted pivotal events leading to and following Princess Diana's passing. The final episode introduced an audacious depiction of Diana as a spectral presence to King Charles and Queen Elizabeth II, sparking mixed reactions.

The actor admitted his initial surprise upon encountering the scenes in the script. "I must admit, when I first read it I thought, 'oooh, how’s that going to work? That’s quite daring,'" West disclosed. Nonetheless, the implementation and his role in the sequence shed light on the innovative storytelling choice.

"But seeing it, and playing it, I sort of realized, 'how else do you get across what Charles and the Queen are thinking about Diana'? You can have her in voiceover, but it’s just not as dramatic. So I think it works really well," said West, praising the approach as a "neat dramatic device" that serves the series' underlying mission.

West also reflected on the initial critical reviews for The Crown's last season, countering with his personal viewing experience. "I’ve only seen the first four episodes, and I watched it with my family, and my mother-in-law, and actually for all the reviews and the critics I read, it’s a rattling good watch," he insisted, highlighting its merits as enthralling entertainment.

In line with West's remarks, Elizabeth Debicki, who embodies Princess Diana in the show's concluding chapters, conveyed her pride in the scenes under discussion. "I’m really proud of that scene," she said, commending West's performance as "astonishingly beautiful."

The eagerly anticipated last six episodes of The Crown season six will be available for Netflix members on 14 December.
