Sony Rolls Out Major PlayStation 5 System Update

One of the key updates is the addition of support for Dolby Atmos HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs, and home theatre systems. Users can now assign a second controller as an 'assist controller,' allowing for collaborative gaming or assistance in challenging game sections. Furthermore, haptic feedback can be enabled while navigating the PS5 system menu, enhancing the sensory experience.

Other notable features announced alongside the update include PlayStation Remote Play support for Android TV OS 12 devices, additional voice commands in the US and UK, and upcoming enhancements to the PlayStation App later this month.

  • To enable this feature, go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers, and turn on Haptic Feedback During Console Navigation.

Support for Compatible Dolby Atmos-Enabled Audio Devices

Owners of Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices such as soundbars, TVs, or home theater systems can now experience 3D Audio through Tempest 3D AudioTech on their PS5, including overhead channels.

  • To enable Dolby Atmos, go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Audio Format (Priority), and select Dolby Atmos.

Social Feature Enhancements

  • Party UI Update: Players can invite others to closed parties without automatically adding them to the group or creating a new group. Additionally, open or closed party invitations can now be sent to groups instead of only individual players.
  • Share Screen Preview: When someone is sharing their screen in a party, a preview image of their Share Screen will be displayed, providing a glimpse before joining the party.
  • Join Friends' Game Sessions Easily: The Friends tab now shows which friends are playing a game that can be joined. Players can join a friend's game directly from their profile card or by pressing the options button and selecting Join Game.
  • Game Hub Tournaments Tile: In the game hub, players can view the number of entered tournaments, highest achieved placement, and the start time of the next tournament.
  • React to Messages with Emojis: Added the ability to add reactions to messages with emojis, making communication with friends quicker and easier.

Ease-of-Use Features

  • Search for Games in Your Library: Users can now search for games within their game library.
  • Game Help Improvements: Game Help cards have been enhanced, displaying available, previously available, upcoming, and completed activities. Details are now shown on the right side of the card for easier access to objectives and hints.
  • Discover New Features: A new Discover Tips section provides useful tips for maximizing the PS5 experience and learning about new features. To access it, go to Settings > Guide & Tips, Health & Safety, and Other Information > Guide and Tips > Discover Tips.
  • Mute PS5 Beep Sound: Users can now mute or adjust the volume of the PS5's beep sound when powering it on or off, or entering rest mode. Go to Settings > System > Beep Sound to adjust the volume or enable mute.

Support for Larger-Capacity M.2 SSDs

PS5 console owners can expand their storage space by using an M.2 SSD with a maximum capacity of 8TB (up from the previous 4TB limit).
