The market of desktop GPUs is experiencing a surge in popularity, with fierce competition between companies. While NVIDIA currently dominates the premium market with its RTX 4090 series, AMD is making moves in alternative segments by offering high specs at affordable prices. Today, AMD is unveiling the powerful Radeon RX 7900 GRE in China, with global availability expected soon.

A Powerful Graphics Card: AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE
The RX 7900 GRE, also known as the Golden Rabbit Edition, is a slightly toned-down version of the RX 7900 XT. It features some minor reductions in the GPU and significant reductions in memory capacity. Compared to the complete RX 7900 XT, the GRE has 80 Computing Units instead of the XT's 84. The game clock of the XT is 2000 MHz, while the GRE operates at 1,880 MHz. The memory capacity drops from 20 GB 20Gbps 320-bit to 16 GB 18Gbps 256-bit, resulting in a decreased memory bandwidth of 800 GB/s to 576 GB/s. Additionally, the board's power consumption has been reduced from 315W to 260W.

AMD positions the RX 7900 GRE as a graphics card suitable for 1440p gaming rather than 4K. The company compares it directly to the 6800 XT, suggesting a similar performance level to the RTX 4070. The AMD 7900 GRE is currently priced at CNY 5,299 in China (approximately $649 US). While global availability has not been confirmed, it is expected to be released worldwide soon.

The AMD 7900 GRE is available from PowerColor, Sapphire, and XFX, along with a reference model offered by AMD. The product was released in China on July 28, but there is no information yet about its global availability or potential name changes.

The AMD 7900 GRE and Its Position in the Market
The AMD 7900 GRE is priced at $200 US lower than the RX 7900 XT, which retails for $849. It is also 400 RMB cheaper than the Chinese MSRP of the 7900 XT. With this pricing, the GRE card presents strong competition for the RTX 4070, which has a retail price of $599 US (although custom models are priced closer to $650 US). According to experts from Expreview, the GRE card falls behind the Radeon RX 7900 XT in terms of performance and power consumption. However, it has the potential to be a compelling alternative to NVIDIA's RTX 4070 in the Chinese market.
In addition to expert reviews, AMD has released its own official benchmarks for the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. The card has been tested on 1440p Max settings across various popular games, delivering impressive average FPS (frames per second) figures:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – 136 FPS
- Dead Island 2 – 154 FPS
- Company of Heroes 3 – 184 FPS
- Cyberpunk 2077 – 94 FPS
- Star Wars: Jedi Survior – 81 FPS
- Forspoken (RT) – 72 FPS
- Dead Space (RT) – 76 FPS
- Resident Evil 4 (RT) – 107 FPS
- The Callisto Protocol – 65 FPS
- Returnal (RT) – 72 FPS
AMD is aiming to launch the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT GPUs around September, which could also coincide with the global release of the GRE variant.
