BBC Question Time: Chris Bryant Accuses Suella Braverman Of Peddling 'Hate'

Labour’s Chris Bryant has accused Suella Braverman of showing “hatred” after the home secretary made a string of controversial comments.

During an episode of BBC Question Time, the shadow minister expressed that there should be "no place for hate on our streets, but there’s no place for hate in the Home Office either".

Braverman, a Conservative minister, had previously accused the police of bias towards left-wing protesters and referred to pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches". She also controversially stated that rough sleeping is a "lifestyle choice".

During the show, Bryant highlighted the concerns of Jewish children in the UK who fear being targeted because of their religious identity.

Bryant criticized Braverman's actions, stating, "It is absolutely right that there’s no place for hate on our streets, but there’s no place for hate in the Home Office either."

He further emphasized that as home secretary, Braverman has a responsibility to support the police in their duties and not undermine them.

He stated, "It’s a fundamental premise of our system that politicians don’t tell police officers who you can and who you can’t arrest. We write the laws and then the police implement the laws."

When asked for examples, Bryant mentioned Braverman's statement that homelessness is a "lifestyle choice" and criticized her for displaying hate towards homeless individuals.

Bryant called for Braverman's resignation, but stated that Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, is "too weak to sack her".

In a recent article for The Times, Braverman accused the police of "playing politics" by favoring certain protesters over others.

This comes amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding a pro-Palestine march set to take place on Armistice Day.

Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats have called for Braverman's dismissal, as Metropolitan Police commissioner Mark Rowley declined to ban the march.

Braverman is also facing criticism from fellow Conservative MPs over her controversial remarks.

One MP stated, "She’s toast. Rishi wants to sack her but she is trying to go over the top to make it more difficult for him to do it because it looks like he’s buckling to press and Labour pressure."

A former cabinet minister expressed disappointment, saying, "Colleagues understand what she’s up to and they find it very depressing."
