China Smartphone Sales Rebound: Huawei Emerges as Top Performer in Q3

A recent report by Counterpoint Research suggests that the smartphone market in China is slowly bouncing back from its decline. In the third quarter (Q3) of this year, sales only dropped by 3% compared to the previous year, indicating a significant recovery trend. Notably, Huawei emerged as the biggest winner during this period, experiencing a remarkable 37% increase in sales.

Surprisingly, Honor, a sub-brand of Huawei, managed to claim the top spot in the market during the July-September quarter. Thanks to the successful sales of its X50 and 90 series, Honor surpassed vivo and Oppo, solidifying its position.

Huawei's dominance can be attributed to its flagship Mate 60 smartphones, equipped with the powerful Kirin chipset. This series has made a significant impact on the market, according to Senior Analyst Ivan Lam. To meet the growing demand, Huawei is actively investing in both online and offline distribution channels.

Xiaomi also experienced a positive sales growth of 5%, maintaining its fifth position in the Chinese market. The company's success can be attributed to the promotional prices of its Redmi K and Note series, which resulted in strong sales. Moreover, Xiaomi focused on offering affordable midrange products to retailers and consumers, effectively countering any potential downward pressure. Research Analyst Alicia Gong praised this strategy, stating that it has proven to be effective.

However, Apple witnessed a decline in its market share due to previous price cuts, which prompted consumers to opt for the iPhone 14 instead of waiting for the new iPhone 15. Oppo and vivo also faced challenges as weaker spending in Tier 2 and lower cities impacted their sales. Unlike Honor and Xiaomi, they weren't as aggressive in their marketing strategies.

Looking at the emerging trend in foldable smartphones, the top-selling clamshell foldable device in Q3 2023 was the Oppo Find N2 Flip. On the other hand, the Honor Magic V2, with its vertical hinge, dominated the overall foldable market. All major smartphone companies are optimistic and anticipate strong sales figures for the remainder of the year.
