Suella Braverman Claims Asylum Seekers Fake Being Gay For Entry

The UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has claimed that some asylum seekers pretend to be gay in order to receive "special treatment." This statement has come after receiving criticism from Elton John regarding her views on immigration.

Braverman's remarks sparked widespread backlash, with the Labour party calling it "dangerous rhetoric" and highlighting the criminalization of homosexuality in many countries, even subjecting individuals to the death penalty.

Defending Her Comments

During an interview with ITV's Peston program, Braverman defended her views, stating, "What we see operationally is that people do game the system. They come to the UK, they purport to be homosexual in the effort to get special treatment."

Pressed further on the issue, she added, "I'm afraid we do see many instances where people purport to be gay when they're not actually gay, but in order to get special treatment."

The Home Office has not provided immediate figures on the number of asylum seekers claiming to be gay. However, official records from 2022 show that out of 1,024 initial decisions made on LGB asylum applications, 72% were grants of asylum. It should be noted that not all of these grants were solely based on sexual orientation.

An Existential Challenge to the West

During a speech at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) think-tank in Washington DC, Braverman argued that immigration presented an "existential challenge" to the West. She acknowledged the difficulties faced by individuals in countries where being gay or a woman is extremely challenging but expressed concerns about the sustainability of an asylum system solely based on fear of discrimination.

In her speech, Braverman also claimed that multiculturalism had "failed."
