Airtel Strengthens Green Energy Commitment for Data Centre Unit

Bharti Airtel, a leading telecommunications operator in India, has recently announced significant progress in its commitment to sustainable operations for its data centre unit, Nxtra. The company has signed agreements with two local renewable energy companies to secure a purchase of 23,000MWh of green energy by end-March 2024 to power six edge data centre facilities.

Increased Renewable Energy Capacity

Through these agreements, Airtel's total contracted renewable energy capacity for its data centre unit, Nxtra, will now exceed 274,000MWh. The operator aims to power its facilities with clean energy and reduce its carbon footprint.

Open Access Route

To achieve this goal, Airtel plans to procure the energy through an open access route. It has acquired a stake in Continuum Green India, which will supply solar and wind power to Nxtra’s edge data centres in Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, Airtel has entered a similar stake purchase agreement with Vibrant Energy for the supply of solar power to a facility in Vijaywada.

Commitment to Sustainability

Ashish Arora, CEO of Nxtra, expressed confidence in India’s data centre industry growth and emphasized the company's commitment to environmental sustainability. Arora stated, "We believe India’s advancement will be mirrored by its data centre industry growth in the coming years. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and leading the green data centre revolution." The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2031.

Expanding Operations

Nxtra currently operates 12 data centres and 120 edge facilities across India. In addition to its renewable energy goals, the company has committed to reducing direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions across its operations by 100 per cent by 2031.
