Early Life

Richards graduated from Thousand Oaks High School and attended the California Institute of the Arts. He ultimately earned a BA in drama from The Evergreen State College in 1975. During his college years, Richards had a short-lived improv act with Ed Begley Jr.

In 1970, Richards served in the Army for two years during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged.
Acting Career
Richards got his big break in 1979, appearing on Billy Crystal's first cable TV special. He went on to have small television roles throughout the '80s, including appearances on "Miami Vice" and "Cheers." In 1989, he starred in Weird Al Yankovic's comedy film "UHF."

In the same year, Richards was cast as Cosmo Kramer in the NBC series "Seinfeld." The show initially struggled but eventually became one of the most popular and profitable sitcoms of all time. Richards won three Emmy Awards for his role on the show. He also made appearances on "The Larry Sanders Show" and in films like "Air Heads" and "Coneheads." Richards had his own sitcom, "The Michael Richards Show," in 2000, but it was short-lived. His most recent film appearance was in "Faith, Hope & Love" in 2019.
Richards withdrew from stand-up comedy following a highly publicized incident in 2006 when he made racist remarks onstage at a comedy club. He apologized on "Late Show with David Letterman," but the incident negatively impacted his career.
