Bob Saget first rose to prominence as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s, and was known for his very risqué humor. Robert Lane Saget, better known as Bob, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 1956. His family is Jewish. His father, Benjamin, was a supermarket executive, and his mother, Rosalyn "Dolly", was a hospital administrator. He spent some time in California as a child before moving back to Philadelphia, where he attended Abington Senior High School. After graduating high school in 1975, he continued his education at Temple University, where he studied film. His student project "Through Adam's Eyes", a film about a boy who received reconstructive facial surgery, was honored with an award of merit in the Student Academy Awards. He graduated from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978.

Career

Even though he started his career in stand-up comedy, touring aggressively throughout the country, Saget first tasted success once he appeared on TV. His first talk show appearance was on "The Merv Griffin Show" in 1981. He then had a brief stint as a member of "The Morning Program" on CBS in early 1987, but it was his casting as Danny Tanner on the show "Full House" that really made him a household name. The series was very popular, consistently ranked in the Nielsen Top 30 from its third season onward. It has continued to gain popularity through syndicated reruns. On it, Saget portrays the role of widowed father Danny Tanner, who raises his three daughters with the help of his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey. The show ran from 1987 to 1995, spanning eight seasons and 192 episodes.

In 1989, Saget also began working as the host of the show "America's Funniest Home Videos" (AFV), a role he held until 1997. During the early 1990s, while both shows were airing, he worked simultaneously on "Full House" and AFV. In 1996, Saget directed the ABC television movie "For Hope", inspired by the life story of his sister, Gay Saget, who had passed away three years earlier from scleroderma. Saget went on to direct his first feature film in 1998, "Dirty Work", starring Norm Macdonald and Artie Lange. From October 2001 to May 2002, Saget starred in the short-lived sitcom on The WB, "Raising Dad", alongside Kat Dennings, Brie Larson, and Jerry Adler.

Saget was married to Sherri Kramer from May 1982 to November 1997. They had three daughters together.

On January 9, 2022, Saget was found dead in his room at a Ritz-Carlton hotel near Williamsburg, Florida, after having performed a set on his stand-up tour the evening before. The autopsy report found that Bob had suffered blunt head trauma from an accidental blow to the back of his head, most likely from a fall, and he passed away from the resulting injuries in his sleep.
