Despite the difficulties, MacDowell pursued her education, attended Winthrop University, and later became a model after being discovered by Elite Model Management in 1978. Sadly, her mother passed away from a heart attack.

Modeling and Commercial Career
MacDowell began her modeling career by working with prestigious brands such as Vogue, Yves Saint Laurent, Armani, and Calvin Klein. Her television commercials for Calvin Klein gained significant attention. In 1984, she transitioned to acting and made her film debut. Although her lines in the film were dubbed due to her accent, this marked the start of her journey in the film industry.
Film Success
Determined to succeed as an actress, MacDowell honed her skills at the Actors Studio and secured her breakthrough role in the independent film "Sex, Lies, and Videotape" after four years of training.
