He is the son of former NFL head coach Mike Shanahan, and he was a wide receiver at the University of Texas at Austin. As a coach, Shanahan started out as a graduate assistant at UCLA in 2003. He was an offensive quality control coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004 to 2005. Kyle Shanahan was born Kyle Michael Shanahan on December 14, 1979, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is the son of Peggy and Mike Shanahan, and he has a sister named Krystal. Mike was working as a football coach at the University of Minnesota when Kyle was born, and he went on to coach the NFL teams the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins. Shanahan attended California's Saratoga High School and Colorado's Cherry Creek High School, and he earned a scholarship to Duke University. Career

After graduating from college in 2003, Kyle became a graduate assistant to UCLA Bruins coach Karl Dorrell. In 2004, he was hired to be the offensive quality control coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under coach Jon Gruden. In 2006, Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak hired Shanahan as the team's wide receivers coach, making Kyle the NFL's youngest position coach. The following season he was promoted to quarterback coach, and in early 2008, he became the NFL's youngest offensive coordinator at the age of 28. Shanahan left the team in 2010 to join the Washington Redskins, which his father coached at the time. In 2012, the NFL fined Kyle $25,000 for his behavior toward replacement officials after a game. According to CBS Sports, "Shanahan chased the officials into the tunnel following the Redskins loss to the Bengals (he was apparently incensed at the unsportsmanlike penalty he received near the end of the game) and reportedly said some NSFW things to the guys in stripes." In December 2013, Kyle and his father were fired from the Redskins. In 2014, Shanahan was hired to be the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator, but he resigned in January 2015 because he reportedly "did not see eye to eye with the front office about quarterback Johnny Manziel."

Kyle married Mandy Maureen O'Donnell on July 3, 2005. Kyle and Mandy met at Cherry Creek High School, and they have three children, daughters Lexi and Stella and son Carter. On the "Bleacher Report" podcast in May 2018, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms claimed that Shanahan named his son after rapper Lil Wayne, whose birth name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. Simms stated, "He was obsessed with Lil Wayne my early years in the NFL.
