The following season he was promoted to quarterback coach, and in early 2008, he became the NFL's youngest offensive coordinator at the age of 28. Shanahan left the team in 2010 to join the Washington Redskins, which his father coached at the time. In 2012, the NFL fined Kyle $25,000 for his behavior toward replacement officials after a game. Kyle married Mandy Maureen O'Donnell on July 3, 2005. Kyle and Mandy met at Cherry Creek High School, and they have three children, daughters Lexi and Stella and son Carter. On the "Bleacher Report" podcast in May 2018, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms claimed that Shanahan named his son after rapper Lil Wayne, whose birth name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. Simms stated, "He was obsessed with Lil Wayne my early years in the NFL.
