Miriam Margolyes, the Bafta winner currently promoting her new book Oh Miriam!, recently sat down with the Irish Examiner to discuss her memoir.

Margolyes, who came out as a lesbian in the late 1960s, initially had reservations about using singular "they/them" pronouns due to her love for grammar. However, after learning more about why certain individuals prefer these pronouns, she had a change of heart. She stated, "Someone explained to me that it mattered, and I thought, if you can make someone happy by calling them 'they', then do it! It’s not hard."

Margolyes emphasized the need for courage and standing up for marginalized communities, while criticizing politicians and media owners as "liars."

It’s worth noting that the singular "they" has been in use since the 14th century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Margolyes has been a vocal supporter of the trans community in recent years. In an interview with The Times in 2020, she stated, "[JK Rowling] has a rather conservative view of transgender people. I don’t think I do. It’s a matter of personal happiness for people and I think that’s what you should concentrate on."

In her 2020 documentary Almost Australian, Margolyes met with a group of indigenous trans women known as the "Sistergirls" from the Tiwi Islands. After a brief misunderstanding and apology, she recognized the importance of one's identity and expressed her understanding.

Margolyes' meeting with the "Sistergirls" was praised as extraordinary by many, although some critics felt the scene could have been handled with more sensitivity.

While promoting her new book, Margolyes has also attracted attention for her comments on Phillip Schofield's This Morning exit and her candid opinions about past co-stars.
