Challenged Minister on Rishi Sunak's Alleged Pandemic Stance

A minister from the Conservative Party faced difficult questions today regarding accusations that Rishi Sunak was indifferent to deaths during the health crisis. The provocative claim originates from a diary penned by Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK's chief scientific adviser, at the time.

In a notable diary entry dated October 25, 2020, Vallance captures a tense discussion at Downing Street involving then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his chief adviser Dominic Cummings. The debate centered around the necessitation of enforcing a second lockdown.

The diary quotes, “DC says Rishi thinks just let people die and that’s ok.”

Televised Interrogation of Treasury Secretary Trott

Appearing on Sky News, Laura Trott, the chief secretary to the Treasury, was grilled by Kay Burley about the controversial remark.

“That quote - is that something you would recognise?,” Burley challenged. “Rishi thinks just let people die and that’s ok.” Trott responded defensively, saying, “I was on the backbenches. The government was striving to save both lives and livelihoods, and that was a critical goal they were trying to achieve. They wouldn’t have gotten everything perfect - and that’s what the Covid inquiry is there to scrutinize.”

Burley also delved into Vallance’s assertion that key government figures, including Sunak, exhibited a lack of “leadership” during the trying times. She pressed on, querying, “Why should we consider the PM apt to lead now if his leadership was inadequate during a massive pandemic?”

Defending the current PM, Trott referred to the measures taken during the pandemic, stating, “It’s not that he failed to lead. Many are aware of the substantial efforts, like the furlough scheme, which were launched to assist people in staying home, preserving their jobs, and securing their income. For numerous individuals, those steps were essential. I believe he demonstrated considerable leadership at that time.”
