Controversy Sparks as Downing Street Mixes Up Flags in Northern Ireland Celebration Post

The Instagram community was taken aback this morning by a controversial post from Downing Street. The post included an image of two dancers outside the iconic No.10, along with a caption that read: "Yesterday we celebrated the culture of Northern Ireland with a reception in Downing Street."

The caption continued to highlight the event, "Businesses from across Northern Ireland showcased some of the best produce the country has to offer." However, the original post mistakenly featured the Irish Tricolour, a flag not representative of Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

In response to the mix-up, a revised post was released swapping the Irish Tricolour for the Union Flag. Nevertheless, this version was also retracted. Eventually, a third update emerged void of any flags.

User Reactions to the Flag Fiasco

Instagram users did not hesitate to express their disbelief at the oversight. One user commented, "You couldn’t make it up," pointing out the ironic error of the government not recognizing the correct national flag.

Another user expressed astonishment, "Imagine working at 10 Downing Street and not knowing the flag of your own country. Just wow." The mistake did not go unnoticed by officials either.

Government Officials Acknowledge the Error

Northern Ireland Minister Steve Baker seemed to reference the error in a post on X (formerly Twitter), showing a lapel badge with the UK and Northern Ireland flags, subtly alluding to the recent mishap.

The incident brought to light a glaring need for a deeper understanding by government representatives, as Baker emphasized, "Doing a grave disservice to the people of Northern Ireland to have people at the heart of our government who understand so little about these kind of issues."

The Prime Minister's spokesperson addressed the blunder, stating: "Obviously that was an error. It was quickly deleted."
