Marcella Claxton's Harrowing Encounter with Peter Sutcliffe: The Long Shadow Unveils Her Story
Marcella Claxton, one of the victims of Peter Sutcliffe, is introduced in the second episode of the drama series, which takes place 191 days after the murders of Wilma McCann and Emily Jackson.
In this chilling narrative, Sutcliffe attacked Claxton, then 20 years old, striking her over the head with a deadly weapon - reports differ on whether it was a spanner or a hammer. However, against all odds, she managed to survive the ordeal.

In the early hours of a morning in 1976, Claxton was returning from a party in Leeds' Chapeltown when Sutcliffe noticed her. Mistaking her for a sex worker, he approached her, but she declined his offer. Instead, she requested a ride home.
In an interview with The Sun, Claxton vividly recounted the terrifying moment she first encountered her attacker. "All I saw was a white man with black hair and a beard, and dark eyes," she confided. "His eyes made him look a bit scary, but I got in. Quite soon, I realized we weren't heading towards my home."
With the knowledge that two local women had been murdered, Claxton grew increasingly frightened about her fate. Desperate to escape, she attempted to open the car door but failed. Anxiety washed over her as Sutcliffe drove her towards Roundhay Park.

When Sutcliffe pulled over, Claxton seized the opportunity to ask for a bathroom break. He reluctantly agreed and allowed her to walk to a nearby cluster of bushes. It was there, hidden from view, that he launched his vicious assault before abruptly fleeing the scene.
"The pain was awful and there was blood everywhere," Claxton recalled. "I thought I was going to die."
Injured and desperate for help, she managed to reach a phone booth and called for an ambulance. However, even as she waited, Claxton caught sight of Sutcliffe's car heading back towards her, fueling her terror. I was convinced he had come back to check if I was dead, or to finish me off if I wasn't," she confessed.

Claxton underwent brain surgery and received over 50 stitches to recover from the attack. Tragically, she also suffered a miscarriage, though Sutcliffe faced no legal consequences for this loss.
Where is Marcella Claxton Today?
Presently at the age of 67, Claxton bears both physical and psychological scars from that fateful morning almost half a century ago. "Peter Sutcliffe ruined my life," she declared. "I can never escape what he did to me. I suffer pain every day, exactly where he hit me."

Speaking to The Guardian, she vented her frustration: "It's like my brain is bursting and hitting the inside of my head, often all day."
Despite her enduring trauma, Claxton finds some solace in The Long Shadow, as it sheds light on the shortcomings of the police force, racism, and sexism prevalent during that period. "I am glad the TV show reveals how terrible the police were," she remarked. "I hope lessons have been learned."
