Labour Party Faces Major Dissent as MPs Favor Israel-Hamas Truce
Keir Starmer has experienced a substantial challenge to his authority when a considerable number of Labour MPs supported a proposal for an immediate ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Among the 58 MPs who opposed their party leader, there were eight frontbenchers. This act of defiance has put their positions as shadow ministers at risk, with potential dismissal looming.

The dissent, however, did not sway the overall outcome in the Commons, where the motion was defeated with a tally of 293 to 125 votes against the ceasefire.

Yasmin Qureshi, a vocal critic within the party, stepped down from her role as shadow women and equalities minister shortly before the crucial vote. She stated, "The scale of bloodshed in Gaza is unprecedented. Tonight, I will vote for an immediate ceasefire.

In the aftermath of the vote, Starmer expressed regret over the disagreement among his colleagues. He asserted his stance, articulating, "Leadership is about doing the right thing. That is the least the public deserves. And the least that leadership demands."
On the other side of the debate, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn criticized the outcome: "Tonight, the SNP voted in line with our values for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. SNP MPs will be able to look themselves in the mirror knowing they did the right thing.
Flynn condemned the opposition to the ceasefire, remarking: "Itβs shameful that a majority of Tory and Labour MPs blocked calls for a ceasefire - and have condoned the continued bombardment of Gaza, which has led to the death of thousands of children and civilians, in breach of international law."
